Trans Advocacy

My current life motto can be summed up by a quote attributed to Maya Angelou: “Do the best you can until you know better. When you know better, do better.”

Once upon a time, I was a kid, brainwashed into a religion that taught some pretty bigoted views and in a family that ran almost fundamentalist in its mentality. My parents were conservative in an extreme way. And I absorbed it all. My version was nicer than theirs, however I was still homophobic and transphobic. To be clear, I wasn’t the worst end of conservatism – I didn’t believe, for example, that the Christian bakers who wouldn’t make a cake for the gay couple were right. In some ways, however, my bigotry was worse because it was couched in kindness. For a really long time, I was a milktoast liberal who believed the system would solve everything if we just trusted it a bit harder.

Thankfully, my sibling came out as trans and I knew I loved him enough to figure my shit out. So I did. And as I learned better, I began to do better.

With this background, I firmly believe that we don’t know what we don’t know and that the only way anyone will ever know better is to have somewhere to find out information. That’s the goal of this section of my website. Whether you are trans yourself, questioning your gender, an ally of trans folk, or unsure about why any of us are doing what we’re doing, this tab has answers.
